Program Overview

CalSAC’s Leadership Development Institute aims to increase the leadership capacity of out-of-school time and early education fields to create more responsive programming, policies and services that reflect the racial, ethnic and cultural diversity of California.  The LDI is an intensive year long cohort-based program for emerging leaders of color in afterschool, school-age child care, summer enrichment and early education.

Program Impact

“LDI helped me see leadership as a viable path to improving my community and validating my vision for my program. It made me comfortable with the thought that I could be someone who makes a big impact in the institution I work with and the people I work for.”

--LDI Alum, Class of 2012

CalSAC launched the Leadership Development Institute in December 2011 following an extensive design and development process. Thirteen fellows were selected from a statewide pool of 39 candidates across the out-of-school time, summer and early care fields. Candidates worked in the areas of afterschool, summer enrichment, school-age child care, and pre-school and indicated an aspiration for advanced leadership. Strong candidates demonstrated some exposure to being a supervisor, working with budgets, and strategic planning and were already familiar with the larger field and exposed to some programmatic and organizational challenges. The pilot program launched with a multi-day retreat and ended October 2012 with a full day reflection and portfolio presentation followed by a recognition ceremony.

“While my job title and position defined me as a leader, before coming into the program I did not really ever attach the word “leader” to myself. Participating in LDI helped me to understand myself as a leader, as well as the different aspects of leadership and how they relate to me. This has been life changing. I feel like there has been a light that has gone off for me in a way that hadn’t before. While I do not propose to be a perfect leader, my understanding of myself as one has changed the way I am at work, and in my community.”

--LDI Alum, Class of 2012

The first cohort of13 LDI fellows completed the program in fall 2012. In a survey administered a few months after the completion of the fellowship, 100% of fellows agreed to strongly agreed with the following:

  • I can better articulate how power and privilege impact one’s leadership
  • I increased my network of support
  • I applied the leadership skills gained
  • I am a leader who inspires others through my own accomplishments
  • I am a leader who understands the interplay between my own leadership and systems of power and privilege
