The After School Division of the California Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to announce that two requests for applications (RFAs) are now available to applicants that wish to apply for federally funded after school program grants. There are separate RFAs for elementary/middle school programs, and for high school programs. Please visit the following CDE Web page to see the RFAs and the instructions to apply on-line at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ba/cp/funding.asp.

The final filing date for these grant applications is November 30, 2012, at 5:00 P.M. A Webinar providing an overview of both RFAs is scheduled for September 24, 2012. More details regarding the Webinar will be made available in a few days.

An estimated $24 million in funding has been allocated for new fiscal year (FY) 2013–14 high school ASSETs grants and an estimated $19 million is available for elementary/middle school grants. Applicants who are successful in the competitive process will receive a five year award, allocated as successive one-year grants. The awards are subject to semiannual attendance reporting (EC Section 8426 (a)(1)) and other reporting requirements.

The below statistics from last year’s grant award process demonstrate the highly competitive nature of the application process.

ASSETs Cohort 7:

For FY 2012–13 (Cohort 7), applicants requested over $122 million in ASSETs program funding, with a total of $17 million being awarded. Of the 199 applications submitted, 12 applications were funded (528 sites applied, 69 sites were funded). The percentage of funding was 13% of the total funds requested.

21st CCLC Cohort 7:

For FY 2012-13 (Cohort 7), applicants requested over $213 million in 21st CCLC elementary/middle school program funding, with a total of $16 million awarded.  Of the 278 applications submitted, 23 applications were funded (1636 sites applied, 147 sites were funded). The percentage of funding was 8% of the requested funded amount, indicating the highly competitive nature of the process.

Expiring Cohort 5 Grants

The ASSETs high school grants which are due to expire on June 30, 2013, amount to approximately $23.5 million. The elementary/middle school grants which are due to expire on June 30, 2013, amount to approximately $25.5 million. It is expected that most of these programs will submit applications for a new grant, increasing the competitive pool of applicants.
