6 Tips for Superior Supervising
Managing staff in an afterschool environment can be
as easy as 1-2-3, with
these simmple rules.
1. Remember the basics.
Things like
employee handbooks, regular staff meetings, and annual
reviews are important to
demonstrate you’re paying attention to staff’s needs.
2. Show staff
they’re valued.
Birthday cards, “employees of the month,” pats on the
back, and, above all, regular recognition help build
morale.
3. Give
feedback regularly.
Besides reinforcement, staff should know their areas
for growth. Be sensitive in addressing challenges,
and listen to
employees.
4. Address problems immediately.
Address bad
attitudes, fighting, and gossip befre an unhealthy
environment—for staff and,
kids—dominates. Don’t let resentments grow.
5. Promote bonding.
Trainer Betsy Haas recommends time for staff play: Have everyone write on a
piece of paper why they like their jobs. Crumple the
papers and commence a mock
snowball fight. Each person should take a “snowball” home to keep for warm
fuzzies.
6. Check in with peers.
Administrators need to hear from others who’ve encountered challenges similar to
their own. Networking—for example, at CalSAC chapter meetings or events—allows
for sharing experiences and solutions.
